Since its inception 34 years ago the ILT Foundation-sponsored Invitation Charity Pairs event had never been cancelled, and the scene that greeted bowlers who arrived at the Georgetown and Invercargill venues on Saturday – equipment abandoned on snow-covered greens – would in the past have forced organisers to abandon the event.
Any questions that remained over the value of constructing the indoor facilities at Waverley must surely have been dispelled, with the event continuing despite the unseasonal conditions outdoors.
Invited players and sponsors were paired with promising development players in a split sixes shootout won by Steve Wilson (Dunedin) and Grant Hurley from Bill Clements (Central Otago) and Jason Heffer on Friday. The announcement of the weekend pairs combinations followed the presentation of proceeds from the event with more than $11,000 donated to the recipient charities thanks to the generosity of the tournament sponsors.
In the Charity Tournament defending champions Bill Clements and Craig Merrilees survived an anxious wait after the preliminary rounds before securing their place in the semifinals on a countback where they were joined by Don Reece and Darryl Scammel, Dennis Leeden and Darren Broome and Averil Fowler and Ali Erskine. Clements started strongly with four shots on the first end against Reece and although the Reece duo reduced the deficit to one shot, they succumbed in the end, 12 shots to 10. The second semi was always a close tussle with the teams tied at 7-all after eight ends and again at 9-all after eleven, but it was Fowler who prevailed with a single shot on the final end, earning them a place in the final.
The 12-end final was another epic contest. With the scores tied at 7-all after eight ends the game was evenly poised but it was Clements and Merrilees who finished stronger against a determined Fowler, scoring a single on the last end to secure back to back titles at 11-8. The win gave Merrilees a historic third success in this event, to become the first player to achieve this distinction.
The plate event was won by Ken Walker and Sheldon Bagrie-Howley over Pete Wilson and Kerry Flowers, with Paul McKinnel and Annie McDonald and Dave Archer and Barry Stewart filling the minor placings.
EDWARDS WINS RARE DOUBLE
Jo Edwards (United Bowling Club, Nelson) added a World Singles Champion of Champions crown to her already successful bowling career after beating Scotland's Caroline Brown 11-5, 3-8, 4-1 in Hong Kong last night. The Nelson bowler's new title comes on the back of another major milestone earlier this year when she took out the World Cup (Indoor) title for the third time.
"It's unprecedented to win a World Cup and a World Champ of Champs in the same year,'' New Zealand national bowls coach Dave Edwards said. "It's an absolutely unbelievable achievement, and I told her that I'm not sure she's totally aware of what she's done.'' Edwards' response was "yeah, you're probably right. I'm not sure it's sunk in yet, but I'm really delighted.'' As Edwards' husband and her coach, Dave Edwards is perhaps more keenly aware of the significance of the win, as it also means New Zealand has won the event for the second year in a row.
Black Jack Jan Khan won the same title last year in Norfolk Island. Beginning her campaign a week ago, Edwards rolled her way through the world's best female bowlers, only losing two matches in the entire event (to Hong Kong and Singapore), and into a semi-final battle with elite Guernsey bowler Alison Merrien - the same opponent she defeated in the World Cup. Merrien proved to be a difficult challenge, but one that Edwards was more than ready to meet.
She defeated Guernsey 3-10, 8-7, 6-0, in Saturday's semi-final and then moved on confidently to address her Scottish rival in the finals; and once again prove that she really is the world's best female bowler.
