Personal Locator Beacon PLB

In Southland we are most fortunate to have some of the best scenic riding on offer in New Zealand right on our door steps. With this comes some very remote riding with often limited to no cell phone coverage making safety a large concern. In recent times the club have become aware of instances where people have been injured and the ability to ride out of these places compromised. Due to these events it has prompted the club to purchase for the use of its members a PLB. This small compact device is easy to carry, super easy to use and will alert the appropriate authorities of any such situations. This is free of charge to financial club members to use and we strongly suggest you take this with you when entering these places. Even Bald hill has multiple grey areas and the potential for injury is reasonably high. The unit is currently held at Southland Electronics but we are working on getting a location that will be available 24 hours. Any queries on availability at this stage please phone Chris 0272432171.There will be a sign out sheet just to ensure the unit is being used by our members and this will have general location details in case the emergency services require it.

Around The Mountain cycle trail Grand opening

The grand opening for this is taking place this Saturday 1st of November. Please come to Lumsden and get involved in the festivities. With heaps of great stalls and fun available there will be something for everyone. Southland Mountain Bike Club champs

Taking place only a couple of weekends away, these are set for the 9th of November. Again taking place on our iconic Bluff trails we are expecting big things this year. With the Bums on Bikes training sessions taking place down on the hill we will see a greater number of our local ladies showing the rest of us how it is done for sure. Ride Cycles single speeds

This will take place on Friday the 12th of December. With Pete (one of Southlands single speed legends) and Melissa from Ride Cycles supporting this event. It will prove to be another challenging and exhilarating ride, of course throw in the optional short cut beverage there is something for everyone. As the last event on the club calender prior to Christmas please come along and give it a go. Even if you do not have dedicated single speed we can assist in locking out gears so you do not miss out.

Welcome Rock Trails

These will with out a doubt be some of the most scenic and stunning trails you will be given the opportunity to ride this year. Set high in the mountains above Garston, this trail will offer unrivaled views of the Eyre Mountains, the Nevis and Mataura Valley's. The trail will ride along the Roaring Lion water race and offer the opportunity to see Chinese mud huts, the iconic Welcome Rock and back country views that until now we could have only dreamed of riding. Built by hand and offered to us by Tom and Katie O'Brien this is one of the first opportunities of its kind in Southland. With prices starting at $40 per person per day for a ride pass or options to stay overnight for the more leisurely pace, this is really affordable and should be a must for all this Christmas/Summer season. Check out Welcome Rock Trails and please support these pioneers in back country riding in Southland.

With the cycle tour starting this weekend the weather is bound to pack up. Remember wind is your training buddy keep riding and enjoy the trails. Good luck to all our local riders in the tour!!!
